Lost Mascots 1: Safey Bear

The name “Safey Bear” might not even ring a bell amongst the Singaporean readers here, but it served as a mascot in the mid ’80s for the road safety campaigns. These set of stickers were distributed in the past bearing graphical illustrations of the mascot. The campaigns were initiated by Professor S. Jayakumar, Home Affairs Minister and Second Minister of Law on 6 September 1986, and carried out by the Traffic Police. The road safety motto was “More Patience, Fewer Accidents”, and Safey Bear (known in Chinese as 小安安) was used to promote this message. On a sidenote, the campaign also introduced several filmlets featuring advocates like SBC artiste Lin Xiu Ming (林秀明; who was previously involved in the Courtesy campaign as well) acting out road safety scenes.
